MINI Cooper S Diesel coming?

What appears to be a MINI Cooper S Diesel out testing

The photo at the top appears to be a MINI Cooper S diesel. Which is not a car we had on our radar, but with MINI any sub niche of a sub niche is fair game, so it seems highly likely that a beefed up S version of the diesel MINI Cooper is in the offing.

As we reported just the other day, we’ve already had at least a dozen new MINIs launched or revealed in 2009 alone. The latest of those are the MINI Roadster and MINI Coupe, but you can add to that the likely launch of the MINI Countryman / Crossman in 2010, not to mention the MINI Rolls Royce Edition. And although the MNINI Cooper S Diesel won’t be a new model as such it will probably spread throughout the whole MINI range, so you’ll be able to have a MINI Coupe Cooper S Diesel or a MINI Roadster Cooper S Diesel, or Countryman or…

So what is likely to be offered with an S version of the MINI Cooper Diesel? More power; pure and simple. With the world and his dog being hung up on economy it seems like a sensible plan, despite our inherent reservations about the seemingly endless versions of the MINI that seem to sprout almost weekly from BMW. It’s got to the point where we doubt even MINI know how many variations there are on the car, and it’s doubtful that anyone ever comes out of a MINI showroom with the car they had in their head when they went in.

Likely power boost on a Cooper S Diesel is likely to see an output of around 150bhp when it finally materialises as an option. That stacks up against the petrol Cooper S at 22bhp short (the Cooper S has 172bhp) but a very healthy 40bhp more than the standard Cooper D. With the extra torque on the diesel Cooper S it will probably feel as quick as its petrol brother.

Is yet another MINI model option news?
