BMW 5-Series GT to get xDrive – BMW 740d xDrive announced

BMW are adding xDrive as an option across the 5 Series GT range

We really don’t ‘Get’ the BMW 5 Series GT. To be fair, we haven’t driven one so it’s a viewpoint from afar. But we can’t deny it fills the gap between the 5 Series Estate and the 5 Series Saloon,  we just hadn’t realised that there was a gap that needed filling. Or indeed that the 5 Series GT could be considered a replacement for the 5 Series Touring. Because as far as the US is concerned that’s exactly what’s happening. They get the GT. They don’t get the Touring.

But at least there are now some new options for the Gran Turismo buyer. Well, one new option anyway. And that option is xDrive, with the introduction of the BMW 550i xDrive GT and the 530d xDrive Gran Turismo to the range from June. Which sounds more like additional models than an option, we confess. But as xDrive is going to be offered on every model in the range (the 535i xDrive Gran Turismo and the 535d xDrive Gran Turismo follow in September) it’s definitely more an option than a new model range.

BMW is going xDrive -tastic with this announcement – a prelude to a debut at the Beijing Motor Show this month – as they’ve also revealed the BMW 740d xDrive to sit at the top of the diesel 7 Series range. There’s no word on how much extra the xDrive cars will be, but we’d guess around £2k over the RWD versions.

Remarkably - for such a straightforward option – BMW has reams to say, so if you must then check out the BMW 5 Series GT and 740d xDrive press release.
