This is an original 1956 Thunderbird all STEEL rear continental spare tire gravel or stone guard with new seal kit installed. This gravel guard is uniquely Thunderbird and was used on all 1956 Thunderbirds from the factory. The bracket on the backside mounts to the continental hinge and pivots with the hinge when the spare tire is lowered. A set of new edge seals was also installed. The former owner applied chip guard to the underside of the guard before painting it colonial white. These steel stone guards have been obsolete from Ford Motor Company for nearly 50 years. Mitsubishi to make Outlander Sport at Illinois plant

It's a further sign that what was once the high-tech preserve of the German brands is now firmly in the mainstream. BMW was one of the brands which pioneered variable-ratio power steering; in essence, it changes the ratio between the driver's inputs at the wheel and the rate at which turns are made at the rack.
